At the scene that I performed yesterday, I think we did a petty good job. We have about 1 week to prepare this scene. And we have to memorize all the lines. Over all it was great and we all memorize all the lines but the weaknesses of that is like some of the lines are writen in Spanish and we doesn’t not understand any of them. And some lines are so long is hard to memorize all of them.

Well if we just read to the book I think most of us will got lost because most of them were Spanish and the book is hard to understand and u need to read it over and over again so you can get a better image in your mind. But if we did a scene like this we all can understand it easily because what the story is talking about is in front of your face .so that the image just freshly comes out and you know what is going on at the book.

Zoot Suit

Zoot Suit

In the beginning of this book, I totally got lost by reading at it, because most of the words are Spanish, and I don’t understand at all. But right now I feel like this is interesting, and can learn some Spanish by reading this book. Valdez writes about the Sleepy Lagoon murder case. Which have a lot challengeable and make the reader to think about who was the murder, all this kind of the stuff. Or maybe you can said that he catch what the reader‘s thinking, so make the book more interesting. The press plays the district attorney and the Judge played by Lt Edwards because this is his political point I think is for people easier to understand.

Home work

In “My Hawaii” and “Aria,” each of the authors reflects and reaches different conclusions about language and culture. Language, everybody is this world should be known at least one kind of the language; in today s society most of the people are bilingual , even if you haven’t implied there still have sign language for you to learn. Culture, is one kind of the experience that everybody had. For example, generally speaking “mother,” this word should be the first word that every language beginner should learnt first; but in different country, people have different culture and language. The way they call their Mother is different. For example, MOTHER MOM MOMMA MAMA Etc. those words is all having the same meaning just their language is different, because we all from a different family had a different culture background and spoke different language.

In Richard Rodriguez‘s “Aria” this is a story about immigrant family, how their kid from English learner. “Without question, it would have pleased me to hear my teacher address me in Spanish when I entered the classroom. I would have felt much less afraid,” become speaking English as her their primary language, and no longer knew what words to use in addressing her parents, possibly you may believe they lose their mother language or their just think here is America known English is good enough, or speaking another language then language will make them feel to embarrass.

In the other hand “My Hawaii” by Nana Veary; she states that “this is tragic for when you lose the language, you lose your identity.” I agree with this text because I m from an immigrant family too. I went to school to learn English. I never lost my mother language, I am so happy to speak Chinese with my friends, parents anybody that known the same language. Not like American born Chinese, most of who do not really know how to speak Chinese, and they feel embarrassed speaking Chinese.

After comparing these two stories, I can conclude that language is relative to culture .When you learn a new language, you also learn the culture from that new language. That does not mean you lost your original language. Because you just learn a new culture, and it is interesting to you, and so you just use it automatically and is not lost your original language.
